What to expect on test day at Sheffield Handsworth
Arriving at the centre
Handsworth test centre is on Orgreave Way, S13 9LT. Arrive 10 minutes early — any later and the examiner can refuse the test. Park in a visitor bay (don't take a reserved staff bay).
Documents
Bring your provisional licence and your theory test pass certificate isn't required at the centre but worth having to hand.
The eyesight check
Out in the car park you'll be asked to read a numberplate at 20 metres. Glasses or contacts are fine — wear what you'd normally wear to drive.
The drive itself
About 40 minutes. You'll cover:
- Around 20 minutes of normal driving on Handsworth, Woodhouse or Mosborough roads
- One manoeuvre (bay park, parallel park, pull up on the right, or forward bay)
- A possible emergency stop (one in three tests)
- Around 20 minutes of **independent driving** — following sat-nav or signs
What catches people out at Handsworth
- The Retford Road junction near the centre — heavy traffic, multiple lanes
- 20mph zones on the surrounding estates — easy to creep over
- Sheffield Parkway slip roads if your route heads west
- Mini-roundabouts on the Mosborough side
Afterwards
The examiner gives the result immediately. Major or dangerous faults = fail. Up to 15 minor faults = pass. We'll be there waiting whatever happens.
