Manual or automatic driving lessons — which should you choose?

15 May 2026 4 min read

The basics

A manual licence (category B) lets you drive any car with a manual or automatic gearbox. An automatic licence (category B auto) restricts you to automatic-only vehicles.

Why people choose automatic

  • Easier to learn — no clutch, no stalling, no hill-start panic
  • Less to think about means faster progress for nervous learners
  • Almost all new electric cars are automatic by design
  • Often a better fit for anxiety, ADHD or coordination challenges

Why people stick with manual

  • Total freedom — manual cars are usually cheaper to buy second-hand
  • Some trade and delivery jobs still require a manual licence
  • Slightly cheaper insurance in some bands

Our honest take

If you find the clutch genuinely stressful after 5–10 hours of lessons, switching to automatic is rarely a step back — it's the difference between passing your test and giving up. Many of our automatic learners pass first time in 25–30 hours.

If you're confident with the clutch and want maximum future flexibility, stay manual.
